The Wicker Man (1973) *

Oddball melodrama, indecisively vacillating between satire, occult thriller and an oddly bogus celebration of pagan life and custom. The climax, though much admired and certainly devastating first time out, is creatively speaking a most shameful cop-out. Screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, an amusing performance from Christopher Lee and more crudely over-dubbed songs than many a musical round out the eccentricity.
